Hassle-Free Water Softening
Soft Patagonian of Milpitas, CA
Milpitas is the clearest case in our whole service area where most homes do not need a water softener, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. The city runs entirely on imported surface water. The east side is on Hetch Hetchy at about 3.5 grains per gallon, and the rest of the city is on treated Valley Water at about 5.9. Both are soft to moderately hard, and there is no groundwater in the city's drinking water supply at all. For context, San Jose Water's groundwater a few miles south averages 16.8 grains per gallon, and San Jose Municipal Water's Evergreen wells reach 23.8. Milpitas is a different world. What both Milpitas supplies do have is chloramine, and that is a separate problem with a separate fix. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission switched the Hetch Hetchy system from chlorine to chloramine in February 2004, and Valley Water treats its imported supply the same way. If your filtered water still tastes like a swimming pool, that is why.

Reviews from our customers ❤️

Awesome experience from request for quotes to scheduling and installation.
They had a few options and packages to chose from. I really appreciated the speed of getting a reply and patience in answering questions before signing on.Nelson came out to install, was extremely thorough in our options on how to install. We had a unique situation with routing our water but he was again, very patient and clear. They removed my old softener and put the new one in its place.
Eduardo came out to do the inspection and explained how to operate. Solid warranty too. All of this was done in a few hours. Highly recommend.

We had considered water softener for many years but were hesitant given the expense. Seeing the damage hard water does to your pipes, your shower appliances, dishwashers, cars, and skin.... Made me realize that water conditioning is a necessity! I called many (7+) sources on Yelp with the highest reviews... but Patagonia was a clear WINNER! Eduardo is simply amazing. He understands the products, the solutions, never tried to upsell me... and listened to all my concerns and provided solutions. His team are all employees and not contractors (very important) so they know exactly what they're doing and do the job with the highest quality in mind. Their pricing is very competitive and their service is world class! I am extremely pleased with their service and have recommended them to family, friends and coworkers!

I definitely recommend Patagonia for all your water needs. My skin feels softer, I use less product in my hair and face. And overall my drinking water needs are fully satisfied and my quality of life has improved a great amount! Thank you.

🛠️ How can I figure out which water treatment solution is right for my home?
That’s exactly where we come in. We’re experts in water treatment and highly familiar with the water quality across the entire Bay Area, Silicon Valley, Northern California, and the Central Coast. We've studied the local water reports and understand the unique challenges in each region—from hard water to high contaminant levels. We’ll assess your specific needs and recommend the right system to give you clean, high-quality water at home.
💧 Is the water hard in Milpitas?
No, and this is one of the few places where we can say that flatly. The City of Milpitas splits its supply geographically, but both sources are imported surface water and both are soft to moderately hard. The east side is on Hetch Hetchy at about 3.5 grains per gallon, which is soft. The rest of the city is on treated Valley Water at about 5.9 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard. There is no groundwater in the city's drinking water supply. Below about 7 grains per gallon a softener has little to do, and the salt, regeneration water and service calls are real ongoing costs against a problem you do not have. The cases where one still makes sense here are narrow: you are on the Valley Water side near the top of its range at 8.5 grains per gallon and seeing real scale, you have an appliance whose manufacturer specifies soft water, or you have measured and are not getting the numbers above, which does happen. Supply and disinfectant figures come from Valley Water's retailer map, and hardness from the City of Milpitas 2025 water quality report. We will measure your own tap at no charge, and if it comes back at 4 grains per gallon we will tell you to keep your money.
🛠️ How does the installation of our systems work?
Our water softener and filtration system are installed at your home’s main water entry point—before the water flows through the rest of your plumbing. From there, it filters and softens the water, delivering noticeable improvements throughout your entire home.
💧 Why does my Milpitas water taste like chlorine?
Because it is chloraminated rather than chlorinated, and hardness is not the Milpitas water complaint. Taste and smell is. Both Milpitas supplies are treated with chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia. It is more stable than free chlorine, which is exactly why it is used across a distribution system this large, and exactly why it is harder to get out of your water at home. Here is the part most people do not know: the pitcher in your fridge and the filter in your refrigerator door are good at removing free chlorine and much weaker on chloramine. Standard activated carbon adsorbs chlorine fast. Chloramine has to be catalytically decomposed, which needs a different carbon and considerably more contact time than a small cartridge can give it. So your filter is not broken, it is the wrong media for the job. What works is an under-sink reverse osmosis system, catalytic carbon under the sink or for the whole house, or both. Our Exchanger Pro RCC and Exchanger Elite RCC systems include catalytic carbon filtration that reduces chlorine, chloramine and ammonia at every tap. If you keep fish, chloramine matters more than taste: it is lethal to fish and does not dissipate by letting water stand out overnight, so a dechlorinator rated only for chlorine will not protect a tank.
How long does the system last? Warranty?
All of our systems are designed to be a long-term solution, with a lifespan of up to 15-20 years. You are covered under a 10 year warranty that covers all parts and labor.
What are your product certifications?
All our water softener and reverse osmosis systems are made in the USA and tested & certified by the Water Quality Association against NSF/ANSI Standards.
