Water Softeners & Filtration in Mountain View, CA

Hassle-Free Water Softening

Soft Patagonian of Mountain View, CA

Mountain View is unusual in Silicon Valley: your water is soft. About 90 percent of the city drinks Hetch Hetchy water piped from the Sierra, at roughly 3.5 grains per gallon. That means most Mountain View homes do not need a water softener, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one. It also means your water is chloraminated. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission switched the Hetch Hetchy system from chlorine to chloramine in February 2004, and chloramine is considerably harder to filter out than chlorine, which is why your pitcher or refrigerator filter may not have fixed the taste. There is one exception worth checking. Mountain View also pumps from four city wells serving specific pockets, near Evelyn and Castro, around Moorpark, and north near Rengstorff, and that water runs 12.9 to 19.8 grains per gallon. If you are in one of those pockets you have genuinely hard water, and most of this page does not apply to you.

Five star rating - top-rated water softener service

Awesome experience from request for quotes to scheduling and installation.

‍

They had a few options and packages to chose from. I really appreciated the speed of getting a reply and patience in answering questions before signing on.Nelson came out to install, was extremely thorough in our options on how to install. We had a unique situation with routing our water but he was again, very patient and clear. They removed my old softener and put the new one in its place.

‍

Eduardo came out to do the inspection and explained how to operate. Solid warranty too. All of this was done in a few hours. Highly recommend.

Five star rating - top-rated water softener service

We had considered water softener for many years but were hesitant given the expense. Seeing the damage hard water does to your pipes, your shower appliances, dishwashers, cars, and skin.... Made me realize that water conditioning is a necessity! I called many (7+) sources on Yelp with the highest reviews... but Patagonia was a clear WINNER! Eduardo is simply amazing. He understands the products, the solutions, never tried to upsell me... and listened to all my concerns and provided solutions. His team are all employees and not contractors (very important) so they know exactly what they're doing and do the job with the highest quality in mind. Their pricing is very competitive and their service is world class! I am extremely pleased with their service and have recommended them to family, friends and coworkers!

I definitely recommend Patagonia for all your water needs. My skin feels softer, I use less product in my hair and face. And overall my drinking water needs are fully satisfied and my quality of life has improved a great amount! Thank you.

🛠️ How can I figure out which water treatment solution is right for my home?

↓

That’s exactly where we come in. We’re experts in water treatment and highly familiar with the water quality across the entire Bay Area, Silicon Valley, Northern California, and the Central Coast. We've studied the local water reports and understand the unique challenges in each region—from hard water to high contaminant levels. We’ll assess your specific needs and recommend the right system to give you clean, high-quality water at home.

💧 Is the water hard in Mountain View?

↓

Mostly no. About 90 percent of Mountain View is on Hetch Hetchy water at roughly 3.5 grains per gallon, which is soft. South of Cuesta Drive the supply is treated Valley Water at about 5.7 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard. Both are chloraminated. The exception is the city's own wells, which serve specific pockets near Evelyn and Castro, around Moorpark, and north near Rengstorff, and run 12.9 to 19.8 grains per gallon. That is very hard. A small area east of Grant Road near Highway 85 is served by California Water Service on a blend of 72 percent Valley Water and 28 percent well water. Supply and disinfectant figures come from Valley Water's retailer map, and hardness from the 2025 water quality reports. Because the answer depends on your street rather than your city, we measure at your own tap at no charge.

🛠️ How does the installation of our systems work?

↓

Our water softener and filtration system are installed at your home’s main water entry point—before the water flows through the rest of your plumbing. From there, it filters and softens the water, delivering noticeable improvements throughout your entire home.

💧 Why does my Mountain View water taste like chlorine?

↓

Because it is chloraminated rather than chlorinated, and that changes which filter works. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia. It is more stable than free chlorine, which is exactly why it is used across a system the size of Hetch Hetchy, and exactly why it is harder to remove at your tap. Ordinary activated carbon, which is what a pitcher filter or a refrigerator cartridge uses, adsorbs free chlorine quickly but reduces chloramine poorly, because chloramine has to be catalytically decomposed rather than simply adsorbed. That takes catalytic carbon and considerably more contact time than a small cartridge can provide. What works is catalytic carbon, either under the sink or sized for the whole house, or a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap. Our Exchanger Pro RCC and Exchanger Elite RCC systems include catalytic carbon filtration that reduces chlorine, chloramine and ammonia at every tap in the house.

How long does the system last? Warranty?

↓

All of our systems are designed to be a long-term solution, with a lifespan of up to 15-20 years. You are covered under a 10 year warranty that covers all parts and labor.

What are your product certifications?

↓

All our water softener and reverse osmosis systems are made in the USA and tested & certified by the Water Quality Association against NSF/ANSI Standards.
