Water Filtration in Sunnyvale, CA

Hassle-Free Water Softening

Soft Patagonian of Sunnyvale, CA

Sunnyvale's drinking water is entirely imported surface water, and all of it is chloraminated. El Camino Real is the dividing line. North of El Camino you are on Hetch Hetchy water at about 3.5 grains per gallon, which is soft. The southern part of the city is on treated Valley Water at about 5.7 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard. Either way, most Sunnyvale homes do not need a water softener, and we would rather tell you that than install something you will be maintaining for fifteen years against a problem you do not have. What both supplies do have is chloramine. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission switched the Hetch Hetchy system from chlorine to chloramine in February 2004, and Valley Water treats its imported supply the same way. Chloramine is considerably harder to filter out than chlorine, which is why your pitcher or refrigerator filter may not have fixed the taste. In Sunnyvale the useful question is almost always filtration, not softening.

Five star rating - top-rated water softener service

Awesome experience from request for quotes to scheduling and installation.

‍

They had a few options and packages to chose from. I really appreciated the speed of getting a reply and patience in answering questions before signing on.Nelson came out to install, was extremely thorough in our options on how to install. We had a unique situation with routing our water but he was again, very patient and clear. They removed my old softener and put the new one in its place.

‍

Eduardo came out to do the inspection and explained how to operate. Solid warranty too. All of this was done in a few hours. Highly recommend.

Five star rating - top-rated water softener service

We had considered water softener for many years but were hesitant given the expense. Seeing the damage hard water does to your pipes, your shower appliances, dishwashers, cars, and skin.... Made me realize that water conditioning is a necessity! I called many (7+) sources on Yelp with the highest reviews... but Patagonia was a clear WINNER! Eduardo is simply amazing. He understands the products, the solutions, never tried to upsell me... and listened to all my concerns and provided solutions. His team are all employees and not contractors (very important) so they know exactly what they're doing and do the job with the highest quality in mind. Their pricing is very competitive and their service is world class! I am extremely pleased with their service and have recommended them to family, friends and coworkers!

I definitely recommend Patagonia for all your water needs. My skin feels softer, I use less product in my hair and face. And overall my drinking water needs are fully satisfied and my quality of life has improved a great amount! Thank you.

💧 Is the water hard in Sunnyvale?

↓

No, not by Santa Clara County standards. Sunnyvale's potable supply is entirely imported surface water. North of El Camino Real it is Hetch Hetchy at about 3.5 grains per gallon, which is soft. The southern part of the city is on treated Valley Water at about 5.7 grains per gallon, which is moderately hard. A small area east of Grant Road near Highway 85 is served by California Water Service on a blend of 72 percent Valley Water and 28 percent well water, which can run harder. The city does operate wells in the southern part of town, but Valley Water's retailer map lists those as irrigation supply rather than drinking water. For comparison, Santa Clara's city wells average 17.1 grains per gallon and San Jose Water's groundwater averages 16.8, so Sunnyvale is three to five times softer than its neighbours on the well side. Below about 7 grains per gallon a softener has little to do. Supply and disinfectant figures come from Valley Water's retailer map, and hardness from the 2025 water quality reports. We will measure your own tap at no charge.

🛠️ How does the installation of our systems work?

↓

Our water softener and filtration system are installed at your home’s main water entry point—before the water flows through the rest of your plumbing. From there, it filters and softens the water, delivering noticeable improvements throughout your entire home.

💧 Why does my Sunnyvale water taste like chlorine?

↓

Because both of Sunnyvale's supplies are chloraminated rather than chlorinated, so however the blend reaches your street, you are drinking chloraminated water. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia. It is more stable than free chlorine, which is exactly why it is used across a system the size of Hetch Hetchy, and exactly why it is harder to remove at your tap. Ordinary activated carbon, which is what a pitcher filter or a refrigerator cartridge uses, adsorbs free chlorine quickly but reduces chloramine poorly, because chloramine has to be catalytically decomposed rather than simply adsorbed. That takes catalytic carbon and considerably more contact time than a small cartridge can provide. Which is why your filtered water can still taste like a pool. What works: an under-sink reverse osmosis system for drinking and cooking water, catalytic carbon under the sink or for the whole house if the shower is the complaint rather than the glass, or both. Our Exchanger Pro RCC and Exchanger Elite RCC systems include catalytic carbon filtration that reduces chlorine, chloramine and ammonia at every tap. If you keep fish, chloramine does not dissipate by letting water stand out overnight the way free chlorine does, and it is lethal to fish, so a dechlorinator rated only for chlorine will not protect a tank in Sunnyvale.

How long does the system last? Warranty?

↓

All of our systems are designed to be a long-term solution, with a lifespan of up to 15-20 years. You are covered under a 10 year warranty that covers all parts and labor.

What are your product certifications?

↓

All our water softener and reverse osmosis systems are made in the USA and tested & certified by the Water Quality Association against NSF/ANSI Standards.
